IF, like me, you have felt a dunce when watching University Challenge then take some comfort from this anecdote from host Jeremy Paxman.

Speaking at the Christ Church Centre on the final night of the festival, he revealed that there are occasions where the apparently brilliant students fail to answer as many as seven starter questions in a row but this is edited out before the programme is broadcast.

Why? Because the BBC doesn’t want us taxpayers to think our money is being wasted on the education system!
