THIS is the curious Grade II listed Wittington Winch in Medmenham, which was last used in 1774, although there may have been similar ones as far back as 1306.
The former Thames Conservancy was involved in a legal dispute over its ownership and the land on which it’s located but it was ruled in 1898 that both belonged to the Wittington Estate, which I believe is nowadays the property of the SAS software company.
Before our local inventor Humphrey Gainsborough developed pound locks these winches were used for the difficult and dangerous job of hauling barges up flash locks and were all along the Thames. However, this is the very last surviving example in our country.
