Hidden Henley

THIS earth mound in Nettlebed Woods has been in existence for as far back as I can remember. Does it date from around the Second World War like the markings on the tree alongside, which reads “POLAND 17 4 1947”, and what was its purpose? Perhaps some knowledgeable reader can advise me?

To find it, you need to walk down the old Bix road which leads from the Highmoor side of Nettlebed to emerge on the A1430 opposite where the well-known former pub, the Fox, used to be.

Although in the past this byway was in regular use, this is now simply a track and is currently blocked by a large fallen tree.
