ONLY a day after its introduction on Monday last, the closure of Henley post office from 1pm to 2pm each day came in for sharp criticism at Tuesday’s meeting of Henley Rural District Council. Members unanimously agreed to call for a restoration of the counter facilities formerly provided during these hours. The Hon Sherman Stonor expressed disappointment at the news about the lunchtime closing, saying that only the previous day he had written a letter to The Times saying how good the local postal services were.

Harpsden was a runner-up in the small village group of the Best Kept Village competition organised by the Oxfordshire Rural Community Council. The parish council was informed of this at its last meeting, when it was stated that the judges had reported most favourably on the condition of the hall surrounds, the cricket field and the school playground.

The Woodland Pony Club won the Prince Philip Cup Mounted Games Championship, held at the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley last week. The team comprised Denise Hutchins, of Moulsford, Elizabeth Waterhouse, of Kidmore End, Elizabeth Bennett, of Emmer Green, Roger Carter, of Whitchurch Hill, and Robert George, of Goring.
