Watson secures double French title

AN Oratory School fifth form student has become the French real tennis champion for both U17 and U19 age groups.

Archie Watson triumphed in the French championships held at Fontainebleau Palace, just outside of Paris, against some of the best French juniors and international players.

Watson won both finals in straight sets in what was an impressive achievement for the 16-year-old.

Speaking after his win, Watson said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to play on a different court in a different country on behalf of The Oratory School. I’m looking forward to my next challenge in Bordeaux in the summer holidays, after I’ve completed my GCSEs.”

Last term, Watson won the real tennis school singles championship and this summer he has been selected to play in the world junior championships in Bordeaux along with fellow Oratory student, J Bradley.

Claire Fahey, head of Oratory racquets and the reigning women’s world champion said: “I am delighted for Archie. It was a great experience for him to go and play in Fontainebleau. It is really pleasing to see Oratory students performing well across various levels of real tennis and seeing the popularity of the sport growing within the school.”

This news comes in quick succession to Claire Fahey’s continued dominance in the field of real tennis, having recently retained her British and Australian ladies’ open singles and doubles titles and a new title as ladies British open doubles rackets champion. This takes her total number of open titles to an impressive 43 wins.

Real tennis is one of the oldest games in the world and The Oratory is one of only four schools with a court. Real tennis is available for students, parents and members of the public to play at The Oratory. For more information, contact pros@ortc.uk
