THE winner of this year’s turkey competition had almost forgotten they’d been entered.

Jerry Hargreaves, of Sonning Common, and his girlfriend Jane Miller, of Kidmore End, were entered into the competition by Jane’s mother, Sue Hedges.

They were among dozens of people to enter the competition to win the 5kg bird together with a range of traditional trimmings worh a total of £140 from Gabriel Machin butchers in Market Place, Henley.

Mr Hargreaves said: “I’d forgotten. When the Henley Standard phoned me, I’d just come off the golf course and I thought it might have been a wind-up.

“I never win anything so I’m absolutely delighted and I absolutely didn’t expect it.” Mr Hargreaves and Ms Miller will feast on the turkey on Christmas Day with 10 of their family and friends including Jane’s sons, Max, 22, Harry, 20, and Ed, 17, and Jerry’s daughters Elodie, 25, and Honor, 20, and Jane’s parents.

Ms Miller said: “We were so busy with other things that Jerry has completely forgotten so he was really surprised. They’re a wonderful butchers so it’s a real treat for us. We will have cross generations so that will be exciting.”
