New signs designed to cut speed

10:30AM, Monday 22 July 2024

VEHICLE-activated speed signs have been installed in four locations in Goring.

Two are in High Street, after Thames Bridge and after the railway bridge, and the other two are in Wallingford Road on the approach to the primary school.

The signs on the High Street will be activated by cars exceeding the speed limit to show the message “20mph Slow Down”.

The signs by the school replace the old “wig-wag” signs. During term time at pick-up and drop-off times, they will show an illuminated school sign.

At other times they will act like those on High Street as a reminder of the speed limit and will be activated by vehicles exceeding it.

Despite the introduction of an overall 20mph speed limit in Goring, drivers regularly exceed it.

The parish council decided that in the interest of safety more visible reminders aimed at offenders would help tackle the problem.

The old signs by the school were out of date and needed replacing.

The new signs will also reduce speeds at the difficult junction with Mill Road.

The council hopes that with less speeding in the village it will encourage more people to walk and cycle as they should feel safer.
