WELL-KNOWN cabinet-maker Ian Desmond has been inspired to branch out from his bespoke library and study schemes and has turned 40 years of design experience to some contemporary one-off pieces.

From his workshop at Henley Enterprise Park, Ian has designed the “Thames” table, with curved legs and braces in laminated birch, inspired by the bends of the river.

Ian’s other influence was “all-time hero” Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Brunel’s engineering has inspired the “bridge-like” form, which is extremely strong and durable.

The model with glass top and inset LED lighting has attracted interest from London designers and architects for use as a foyer table bearing their company logo. It would not be out of place in an Embankment apartment or, as one client observed, on a yacht.

Ian is uncertain whether Henley is ready for this design but points out that for homes the table can be scaled down to a lower height for coffee or table height for dining.

The feet give adjustable height, the top can be marble or heat-treated for kitchens and the finish is durable for outside use on patios, pool-side — or indeed on deck.
