Boathouse is listed

A VICTORIAN boathouse in Goring has been listed at Grade II in recognition of its historic and architectural interest.

The boathouse, recognised by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, was built for Samuel Saunders, a pioneering boatbuilder and engineer, in around 1894.

It is a rare example of a late Victorian commercial boathouse on the non-tidal River Thames.

Saunders commissioned the boathouse to take advantage of the village’s growing popularity on the river since the arrival of the railway in the 1840s.

It was designed to showcase Saunders’s business to the public, offering boat-building services and craft for hire.

Saunders developed and patented a new experimental method for boat building called Consuta, meaning sewn together in Latin.
