HENLEY ran out 92-70 winners in their five mixed triples Oddfellows Triples League match at READING on Saturday.
The visitors won on three of the rinks to pick up 10 league points to the hosts’ two. The win puts Henley second in the table but teams below them have games in hand.
Peter Borsberry, with Ken Rumens in his first league game and Pete Falle, led from the start, never fell behind and ran out 19-12 winners. Peter Menhinick, with Nigel Bridges and Joan Edwards, had a similar experience, always edging ahead to also win 19-12.
Kevin Browne, with Sally Daniells and Martin Cranstoun, had a much closer match with neither side really dominating. With Henley trailing 13-12 on the penultimate end, the visitors couldn’t quite find the winning touch and went down 14-12.
Norman Daniells, with Angelika Crisa and Ramsay Adams, dominated the scoreboard and with a decisive eight-shot haul on the ninth end they sealed a 33-13 win. Simon Hatcher, with Melinda Swann and John Munnelly, battled hard but couldn’t find their rhythm and went down 19-9.
On Sunday HENLEY held its two wood pairs competition. Sixteen members entered and were drawn into two pools of four teams each and each pool played a round robin of three games of 12 ends each.
The three pool games were completed before lunch was taken. After lunch, the top two teams from each pool then played off in the semi-finals with blue pool winners, Ramsay Adams and Peter Watkins losing to red pool runners-up Nigel Bridges and Richard Kingston and red pool winners Pete Falle and Terry Hearmon beating blue pool runners-up, Kevin Browne and Glynis Holland. In the final Falle and Hearmon triumphed over Bridges and Kingston.
Last Wednesday SHIPLAKE ran out 99-65 winners in their home Plomer Cup match with WATLINGTON.
The hosts’ top performing team was that of Jane Ward, Mick Lovejoy and John Townley, who won 26-8. There were also wins for Margaret Bullock, Dave Bullock and Jim Bland, 27-17, and Sylvia Blackmore, Alan Gough and Graham Kennedy, 22-13. Meanwhile Janet Townley, David Challis and Tony Reid drew 13-13. On Saturday SHIPLAKE edged out visitors TWYFORD 49-47 in a three triples friendly match.
There were wins for Jenny Ward, Sue Pitcher and Alan Gough, 22-12, and Neil Warley, Sue Reid and Jane Ward, 18-11.
On Sunday SHIPLAKE edged out visitors BURGHFIELD 85-82 in an Oddfellows Triples League match, despite the visitors winning on three of the five rinks.
Shiplake were indebted to Marilyn Mowatt, Jane Ward and Graham Kennedy, who won 29-10. Shiplake’s other winning rink was that of Jean Buckett, Dave Bullock and Tony Reid, 20-16.
A weakened WARGRAVE side, missing four regular players, went down to a 74-58 Kennet League defeat against WOKINGHAM B on Tuesday of last week. Wargrave’s best rink was that of Roger Prew, Vic Waite, Wayne Manley and Brian Stain who won by nine shots while the rink of Allan Crisp, Ian Robbins, Martyn Mellor and Fred Furneaux missed out by just one shot in a close-fought match.
On Wednesday of last week WARGRAVE went down to a 98-56 friendly defeat at CIPPENHAM where they lost on all four rinks.
Sue Patterson played well for Wargrave in her first ever match while the rink of Chez Annetts, John Coombes and Martyn Mellor saw themselves 10-2 down by the seventh end. With three good ends they bought it back to 10-10 before Cippenham regrouped and won 20-12.
WARGRAVE got back to winning ways on Saturday when they defeated visitors MAIDENHEAD THICKET 83-45.
