Activity group for autistic children celebrates successful summer

Four weeks of fun at Camp Mohawk have come to a close for CATS Young People's Project.

The community group, for children who attend mainstream school and have an autistic spectrum condition, made use of the base in Highfield Lane, Wargrave, for its annual summer camp.

A kind donation from St Piran's School in Maidenhead allowed the project to use their minibus to transport the youngsters to camp, for days of building shelters, sculpting pottery and other activities.

A total of 65 children attended over the four week period and, thanks to the Berkshire Community Foundation, the team were able to take the children on off-site canoeing and kayaking trips in Hurley this year.

During the school term, CATS Young People's Project meet on a Monday at St Marks Crescent Methodist Church in Allenby Road, Pinkneys Green.

Helen Harris, chairperson for the group, said: "The camp is hugely important for them because they can just be themselves, we can talk about the difficulties they have and it also really helps the parents."
