A PETITION with 12,711 names demanding that the casualty unit at Townlands Hospital in Henley stays open was presented to the town council this week. Organiser Shirley Brown became determined to persuade the health authority to change its mind when the threat to close the unit was first revealed last summer. Despite reassurances from the director of public health for the West Berkshire Health Authority that there had never been any such proposals, Mrs Brown remains adamant that the feelings of local people should be made known.
Raiders made off with £10,000 worth of clothing from the fashion chain Benetton in Duke Street, Henley in a raid in the early hours of Wednesday. Residents in the area were woken by the noise of shattering glass and saw three men fleeing.
Angry café owner Janice Grove has strongly criticised South Oxfordshire District Council for doing nothing to clean up the pigeon mess outside her business premises. Mrs Grove, who owns the Gallery Coffee Shop in Greys Road, Henley, claims it is more of a health hazard than the smelly rubbish outside some premises, She has even reported dead pigeons hanging above the premises. “It’s absolutely disgusting,” she said.
