Hidden Henley

SOME older readers may remember that there was once an airfield in Henley.

Located at the highest point just beyond Remenham Hill on the Crazies Hill side of the A4130 going towards Hurley, it is now fields with nothing to indicate its past.

However, a search of the internet reveals some photographs of the old buildings and the anti-invasion defence structures known as pillboxes.

During the Second World War the grass airstrip was used for testing Spitfires and as an overflow for the RAF airfields at White Waltham and Woodley. It was closed in 1945.

My photograph was taken from a public footpath and shows a best guess as to which part was the runway back then.
