    THE former owner of the Flying Scotsman has appealed for the original nameplates to be restored to the locomotive.

    Sir William McAlpine, from Fawley, owned the engine for 23 years and says the brass plates were removed in the Nineties.

    He sold the engine to Dr Marchington in 1996 but claims to have been unaware the plates had been replaced until it was sold to the National Railway Museum in 2004. One of the plates was due to sold by auctioneers Bonhams for up to £35,000 until Sir William intervened.

    The plates date from the Thirties, when the engine was running between London and Edinburgh.
