AFC HENLEY STARS U17s secured all three points with an impressive performance against club rivals AFC Henley Eagles U18s in the East Berks League at Harpsden on Saturday.
Henley Stars sitting top of Division 2 with the Eagles in third was a perfect set-up for the derby game.
Early exchanges were pretty even, but when Billy Wilson scored with a strike from outside the area giving the Eagles keeper no chance, the Stars began to take control of the game. Joey Newman added a second soon after as confidence began to grow throughout the Stars side.
The second half started similar to the first but the Eagles struggled to threaten the Stars goal and when George Strong and Newman added two more goals the result was all but over. For the Eagles, an encouraging start disintegrated and further goals from Strong and Joel Gosby late in the match sealed the win for the Stars. The scoreline could have been far worse if it wasn’t for some excellent defending by Henry Arthur at the heart of the Eagles defence.
To cap a memorable game with minutes to go Josh Ward coolly sent the Eagles keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot and it was Josh’s first game back after recovering from a double fracture sustained in the first game of the season back in September.
