A GIRL with a heart and lung condition raised more than £1,150 for charity by completing a 5km run.
Millie Roberts, nine, of King’s Road, Henley, took part in the RBC Race for the Kids, which was organised by Great Ormond Street Hospital to raise money for its cardiology unit.
Millie, a pupil at Rupert House School in Bell Street, had a 24-hour heart monitor fitted by the hospital in 2014. She took 36 minutes to run the course around the Olympic Park in London together with eight family members, including her mother Sarah Roberts and grandmother Hilary Roberts.
Millie said: “I’ve been showing off my medal and all my friends are impressed.”
Mrs Roberts said: “I’m enormously proud of Millie. I knew she would complete it but I didn’t think she would run it all. A lot of people helped to keep her going. She had her cousins either side of her all the way round. Lots of her consultants and hospital staff were also there.
“It was a truly wonderful day and lots of money was raised.”
Millie trained for the race by jogging on theBaltic coast in Sweden while staying with her grandparents. She has previously run a £5km in Battersea Park in aid of the hospital. She now plans to take part in next year’s race and has already recruited her PE teachers to join her.
The youngster was the inspiration for the Millie’s Dream appeal, which was started by her mother in 2013 to raise money to install defibrillators at 10 local schools. So far, it has bought 45 devices and is still fund-raising.
