FOLLOWING sell-out runs at the Brighton Fringe and Greater Manchester Fringe earlier this summer, where it was awarded the five-star Gold Stamp and nominated for best cabaret act, the award-winning biographical musical Somewhere Under the Rainbow is coming to the Henley Fringe.
Subtitled “The Liza Minnelli Story”, the one-woman show is playing at the Town Hall Chambers on Wednesday and Thursday from 7.30pm to 8.30pm and on Friday and Saturday from 8.45pm to 9.45pm.
Irish actress Sharon Sexton, who has just finished appearing in the West End production of Billy Elliot the Musical, was awarded the Eva-Gore Booth award for best female performer for her portrayal of the Hollywood icon.
Written and directed by Cillian O’Donnachadha, Somewhere Under the Rainbow is set in the intimate surroundings of Minnelli’s dressing room, where the audience are invited to step beyond the footlights and decide for themselves what is truth and what is illusion.
The daughter of Wizard of Oz star Judy Garland, Minnelli won a best actress Oscar for her performance as nightclub singer Sally Bowles in the 1972 film version of Cabaret.
Sexton delivers a compelling performance as Ms Minnelli, sharing legendary stories and secrets from a fascinating career and belting her way through many of the signature tunes from the Minnelli songbook, as you have never heard them sung before — including Mein Herr, Some People and Maybe This Time.
