Windsor Castle unveils its Christmas displays, with 20-foot tree in St George’s Hall

Windsor Castle has now opened its Christmas season - offering visitors a festive display set against some of the most historic rooms in the royal residence.

St George’s Hall features a 20-foot Nordmann fir grown in Windsor Great Park, decorated with more than three thousand lights and green and gold ornaments, with garlands draped along the balconies beneath the vaulted ceiling.

The Crimson Drawing Room, one of the Semi-State Rooms open only in winter, contains a second tree standing 16 feet high, set against the room’s red silk walls and gilded detailing.

Visitors to Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House can see a miniature Christmas scene, including a 45cm tree decorated with ornaments made from repurposed glass beads and tiny candles made from real wax.

The Undercroft Café, in the oldest part of the Castle, is serving a seasonal menu for the duration of the display.

For the first time, £1 tickets are available for visitors receiving Universal Credit and other named benefits, with up to six tickets permitted per household.

Tours of the Castle’s Great Kitchen, thought to be the oldest working kitchen in the country, will run on selected days and can be added to a standard ticket.

Family activities during the school holidays will draw on Victorian-era traditions, with craft sessions and Christmas carols performed by local school and community choirs under the tree in St George’s Hall.

Income from admissions and retail supports the conservation of the Royal Collection and the wider work of the Royal Collection Trust.
