WATLINGTON Parish Council has applied for a parking order for the Hill Road and recreation ground car parks.
If approved, the council will have new powers to enforce restrictions at the free car parks instead of putting warning stickers on offenders’ cars.
Drivers using the Hill Road car park would be charged £35 if their car was parked for more than three hours in the two-hour short-stay bays between 9am and 5pm on Mondays to Saturdays, parked in a disabled bay without the relevant permit or parked outside of a bay. These fines would be doubled if not paid within 14 days of the notice.
Drivers using the car park would also be charged £25 if their car was parked in the short-stay bays for between two and three hours from 9am to 5pm, or £50 if the fine is not paid within 14 days. Cars could be parked free of charge for up to 15 hours between 5pm to 9am on Mondays to Saturdays or up to 23 hours on Sundays.
Commercial traders wishing to use either car park would be charged £20 a day. The parish council initially considered solely including the Hill Road car park in the order but have now decided to extend it to include the recreation ground.
Council chairman Ian Hill said: “The reason why we are doing this is to make sure the car park is available for people to come shopping in the town. There are periods in the morning when the car park is full or virtually full and what we do not want is people coming in, seeing there are no spaces and going somewhere else.
“The shops in the town are paying the large part of the cost of running and maintaining the car park so we want to make sure it’s available to them.”
He said the council had no plans to employ someone to monitor the car parks full-time.
Councillor Hill said: “At the moment the parish council do informal checks and if a car is sitting there for days on end we will start monitoring it. We don’t intend to appoint someone to sit in the car park and watch all the time.”
The parking order has been sent to South Oxfordshire District Council which will forward it to Oxfordshire County Council for approval.
