Pupils and parents raising money for new playground

A GROUP of parents and children from Sacred Heart Primary School are to take on two long-distance runs to raise money for a new playground.

The five adults and eight pupils will take part in the Maidenhead 10-mile event today (Friday) and the Reading half marathon on April 14 in a bid to raise funds for a new playground.

The children will take part in the children’s race tomorrow while the adults will take part in one or both of the races. A total of £1,025 has already been raised.

The idea was thought up by Linda Winder, of Highlands Park, Henley, who last year completed the Oxford half marathon in aid of the school.

Mrs Winder, whose children, Willow and Melody, attend Sacred Heart, raised £800 for IT equipment. She said: “I thought it would be nice to get a bigger group from the school interested in doing something similar.

“Most of the people taking part have never done anything like this and a lot of the adults haven’t run for more than 10 years.

“It’s really nice to get the children involved as well. We’re each doing our own training and will be joining together on the day. I’m hoping to do the half marathon in around two hours.

“I finished in two hours and 20 minutes last time, so I’m hoping to shave a bit off and give myself a bit of a challenge.”

The group will be supportd by friends and family at the events and will get together for a celebration afterwards.
