Children’s memorable experience at mini marathon

MORE than £950 was raised by children at Shiplake Primary School by running the London Mini Marathon.

Fifty pupils from reception to year six travelled to London to take part in the one-mile fun run to raise money for new PE and IT equipment at the school.

Dressed in their royal blue and yellow sports kits, the children ran past Horse Guards Parade and along Birdcage Walk past Buckingham Palace before finishing at The Mall. Parents, friends and family members supported the children by cheering and clapping and the runners received medals at the end.

The older pupils buddied up with younger ones, ensuring that no one was left behind.

Year one teacher Bronwyn Marrison said: “They all ran the mile with great determination and supported each other with smiles on their faces. It’s an experience that will stay with them. It was more the taking part than running for the medal. They just wanted to have fun and experience a little bit of what the London Marathon was like and the atmosphere. Some were even saying they couldn’t wait to take part when they’re older.”

When the children returned to school, they were excited to show off their medals and tell the rest of the pupils and the teachers about the event. Headteacher Katherine Page-Howie, said: “We are so very proud of all the children who took part.

“Our thanks go to all friends and family who sponsored the event. Everyone’s support is very much appreciated. A very big thank-you to the staff that organised the event, Bronwyn Marrison, Sonia Smith and Anette Crick, and the parents that accompanied their children. What a very special day.”
