THERE will be no talks over Zoom in January, we are taking a Christmas breather, but they will return in February. The first in-person meeting, at Woodcote village hall, will take place on Wednesday from 7.30pm.

Here, Katherine Carter will tell the story of how Winston Churchill’s meetings at Chartwell strengthened his fight against the Nazis.

In the Thirties, amid an impending crisis in Europe, Churchill found himself out of government and with little power. During the time, Chartwell, his country home in Kent, became the headquarters of his campaign against Nazi Germany.

He invited trusted advisors and informants, such as Albert Einstein and T E Lawrence, to help strengthen his hand as he worked tirelessly to sound the alarm at the prospect of war.

Katherine uncovers the history of these closed-door meetings that helped Churchill gather intelligence about Germany’s preparations for war and put himself in a position to change the course of history.

Katherine is a curator and historian who has managed the house and collections at Chartwell, Churchill’s country home, for more than a decade.

A commentator and adviser on the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill, she lectures internationally and appears frequently in print and broadcast media.

Entry is £8, which includes your entry ticket to the talk, a question and answer session and refreshments (beer, wine, soft drinks).

We ask for payment in advance. If you are unable to pay in advance there will be a facility to pay on the door.

Entry to village hall talks for students and under-21s is now free.

Tuesday, February 3, sees the return of the Zoom meetings and, from 7.30pm, Taylor Downing will present “1983: The World at the Brink”.

Then, on February 11, the village hall will host Gordon Rogers from 7.30pm, who will present a talk titled “Churchill’s Toyshop”.

To register for Zoom events, contact info@bmmhs.org. Log-in details will be emailed to you on the morning of each talk. A donation of £5 is requested for each talk to cover speaker costs, licence fees and the charity donation.
