Children who may not see Christmas feel the 'magic' in July at Ascot Racecourse

A charity has brought the magic of Christmas to Ascot Racecourse for the families of seriously ill children – in the middle of July.

The fun-filled day of activities included everything from fairground rides and tribute acts to a surprise visit from Santa and Mrs Claus.

Sebastian’s Action Trust created the event on Sunday, July 13, to bring the magic of Christmas to children who, due to their illness or disability, may not experience the festive day itself.

Head of Family Services for the charity, Assunta Soldovieri, said: “Events like these are an opportunity for families to come together, away from the challenges of everyday life, to have fun and create special memories that will last a lifetime.

“It’s the flagship in our calendar of events for life-limited children, their parents and siblings, giving families facing unimaginable challenges the chance to enjoy experiences that most take for granted.”

The event, now in its 12th year, welcomed over one hundred families of children with life-limiting conditions to Ascot Racecourse on the day.

Founded in 2004, Sebastian’s Action Trust supports families’ wellbeing by providing restorative breaks, inclusive events and activities, and emotional support, including bereavement care for those who have lost a child.

Designed to be fully inclusive, the event included an incredible wheelchair-friendly tree-climbing experience and accessible fairground rides.

Families also enjoyed children’s entertainers, a petting zoo, and live tribute acts – along with an appearance from Santa and Mrs Claus.

Supported mum, Vicky said: “This was our first event and we were all amazed by everything that had been put on for families.

“The children had such a great day and were able to experience things they have never done before - like stroking a snake and having a pony ride.

“As parents, the opportunity to attend something like that and feel fully accepted was very special.”

Sebastian’s Action Trust thanked Ascot Racecourse, LEGO, Oracle and Fujitsu, along with the charity’s volunteers and supporters, for making the special day possible.
