ACTOR George Cole touched the lives of many, so it’s hardly surprising that a memorial to him could be installed in his home village.

Cole, who was best-known for playing crooked car dealer Arthur Daley in the TV series Minder, lived near Stoke Row with his wife Penny before his death in August, aged 90.

The suggestion of a memorial by renaming Newnham Hill Bottom “George Cole Lane” was made to Stoke Row Parish Council.

However, councillors felt this was unrealistic due to the need for consent from householders and the difficulties associated with changing address.

Now they are to consider other options with the consent of Cole’s family. How about a sculpture of Daley’s trilby?
